DFI Day 5

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

There is a huge bank of lesson plans and resources on the Manaiakalani website that are constantly being added to. These resources will be hugely beneficial for my teaching and therefore will accelerate my students in learning, creating and sharing.

We discussed using the correct language around being cybersmart. We do not call this cyber safe. It is important to teach your students that when they are online they leave a digital footprint. Everything is visible. This means that when they are posting online they need to remember that they are posting as them (not someone else). Teaching this is important!

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Below I have embedded a video of myself explaining how to embed a video from Screencastify. Using this extension has been extremely valuable for myself personally as it is rewindable learning that I can go back to at a later date. I can record exactly how to complete a task and easily access it on my blog.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners

We discussed using voice typing to help with students punctuation as they have to verbally add in their punctuation. I may give this a go next week.

I found some slides with a selection of Chromebook shortcuts, which will be fantastic to print, laminate and have on display in the classroom for my students to refer back to.

My students will continue to create their own Screencastify videos explaining their research project slides which will be shared with the class and later posted to their blogs.

Below is a Screencast of what you need to add when posting to to your Blogger.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

After using Screencastify quite a few times now I am feeling quite confident at implementing this into my classroom practice. I learnt how to cast my entire screen to the TV instead of just casting my tab which has helped improve my workflow hugely as I don't have to stop and start casting between tabs.

Many of the shortcuts I learnt today have been mind blowing! I will use these constantly and this will help my workflow.

DFI Day 4

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Today we discussed the importance of students sharing their work with authentic audiences. As we delve into these discussion I had some ideas which I would like to try and implement into my literacy program next week at school. The first idea I had is begin using Google Slides to display the student learning.Students who are fast learners could extend their learning by recording themselves explaining their slide using Screencastify. This video could then be shared with the class and eventually we will begin to add students work to Blogger.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Learning how to use Google Sheets competently is something I have always wanted to learn, so I found this session really valuable. I am feeling a lot more confident and can see the value of this in my professional life. I collected my students assessment data and colour coded it to the different stanines my students are working at. My data is identified with a gradient from red (low), to yellow (mid) and green (high). I find that this gives me a quick visual of who is working at what stage for each assessment.

I then took this data by highlighting the students names and their data went insert, chart. I played around with the different settings and chose a bar graph to display my students data. It is very clear in this graph what stanine each students in my class is working at from each assessment because of the coloured bars.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Over the week I had some trouble trying to erase the background on my students shark drawings so we has some discussion about some different sites to used and we found one that worked really well that I am going to use with my students next week. We went onto Burner Bonanza and in one click the background was deleted. Next week we will implement this site and use our shark drawings to start our animations on Google Slides.

Experiments with Google (AR experiments) - Make music with your body movements on your Chromebook.

Screencastify - Students could create a video of how to complete a Chromebook skill and share this with
those who may need the rewindable learning to help them.

Google Slide ideas for Literacy - For my literacy program I could create a range of Google Slides to share
with my different learning groups. E.g. book reviews, spelling vocabulary, research projects.

Google Forms -
We made our own Google Form where we can add questions for our students to answer. You can also add photos, videos and links in Google Forms.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Following on from previous DFI sessions I used Toby Mini to create a new tab for my students writing group. I feel like this will be a really helpful extension that I will use in my personal life to simplify my tabs.

DFI Day 3

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Today I learnt about some new ways of sharing students learning and creativity with whanau. We listened to Kent who shared how his school uses drones and student videos to live stream events such as cross country, rugby games and netball games for families around New Zealand and the world to watch live. This was a great look at just what is capable in this forever changing digital world and outlined just how important sharing is.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I feel as tough I have a huge bank of creative ideas to go and explore which is developing my confidence and really empowering me as a professional to develop and implement these ideas in my classroom. I can see that through engaging in today's activities just how powerful they really are. I have been so engaged and focused in the digital tasks which has really shown me the importance of this digital technology.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

I used Google Drawing to create an image including text to welcome people to my blog. I used Bitmoji to add a animated picture of myself and learnt how to add this to the sidebar on my blog. This is a great site that I will use in the future with my students when creating digital drawings.

I also used Google Slides to create an animation of a shark eating a fish. This activity was very engaging and I could see this being a very effective activity that I am going to try and implement into my teaching next week. I added this slide to my class learning hub and will use our animations as part of our writing!

I also learnt how to add a a slide to blog by going into; File, publish to web, embed, publish, ctrl copy https;//. Next you have to open blogger, hit new, click into http and ctrl paste.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I can see that I am becoming a lot more confident at using all of Google Suite and I am coming away from these sessions with a brain overload of how I can use all of this content. I can use some of the skills learnt today for my own personal blog which has helped develop my confidence with using Blogger.

DFI Day 2

Time to reflect and share with colleagues

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Today's focus was all about learn (Ako) from the Manaiakalani pedagogy, where we focused on effective teaching driving accelerated learning. We as teachers need to be able to recognise our effective practice, amplify it and turbo charge (RAT) in a digital environment.

R- Recognise

A - Amplify

T - Turbo Charge

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Today I developed my skills and knowledge in GMail, Google Keep, Google Calendar and Hangout Chat. I can now send out GMails of events that the recipient can easily add to their Google Calendar or add and share a meeting for Hangout, where you can share your tabs while chatting with others online.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

We read some students Summer Learning Journey Blogs and this has really inspired me to consider using a blog for my students to share their learning with other students around New Zealand and the world. I set a date and time for a Hangout on Google Calendar, added the team members and from here we were able to join in a group chat. We discussed the Summer Learning Blog and recorded our conversation using Loom.

See the link for our Hangout discussion recorded by Loom:

Outline -  In Google Documents to view the contents of the page along the side of the document go to; view, show document outline.

Bunny Ears - Two finger on the track pad to scroll up and down the page.

Bunny ears tap - Two finger tap (right click)

Omni Box - URL Box where the web address sits

ctrl - shift - V - This is how we should always paste so our font formats correctly.

Loom - Used to screen cast out Hangout group chat

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

On Google Keep I was able to add collaborators to my lists so they could add and edit items, along with changing the colour of the notes and making a copy of the lists. On Google Calendar the M key links to month view, W key links to the week view, T links to today and A links to a list of the agenda.

DFI Day 1

Time to reflect and share with colleagues

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Today I learnt about the power of learn, create, share and how it is helping children engage in their learning in all curriculum areas. Manaiakalani is evidence based and has shown to be very successful.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

I now know some new ways of using Google Docs to create content for my classroom and I can use voice typing with a New Zealand accent when typing will take too long.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Today on Google Docs I learnt the importance of headings and how to link those headings to create a contents page. I can apply this to my classroom practice by setting up just one GoogleDoc for a subject, such as writing, during the first term. Here the students add their work to the one Google Doc instead of creating multiple documents.

We discussed the importance of filing and naming Google Docs before adding any text, along with adding the children's initials when naming their GoogleDoc so that their work can be identified easily.

Scavenger hunt activity - Children have to answer questions or could be used to teach children about using Google Docs.

Google Groups used as literacy groups so children can share their learning with one another, edit and give feedback before they share it out to the blog. Groups for comprehension question.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

The shortcut ctrl + shift + v when pasting so that the background formatting does not change when pasting to a new document.

Ctrl + F in an online PDF can search for keywords in the doc
